One common mistake: pushing HSL saturation on the smoke color affects every pixel in that hue range across the whole image, including skin tones and clothing. Tip 3: Masking to Separate Smoke from Subject
Lightroom's AI masking tools (available in Lightroom Classic 11 and later and in the current Lightroom cloud version) make smoke and subject separation possible in a few clicks. The workflow for smoke bomb photos is:
- Open the Masking panel (the circular icon below the histogram, or press Shift+W).
- Select "Add New Mask" and choose "Subject." Lightroom's AI will attempt to isolate the person in the frame.
- Invert the mask to select everything that is not the subject: the smoke, the background, the sky.

Tip 4: Use the Dehaze Slider to Make Smoke Read Three-Dimensionally
The Dehaze slider in Lightroom's Basic panel (or Effects panel in older versions) was designed to cut atmospheric haze from landscape photos. For smoke bomb photography, it does something counterintuitive but extremely useful: a small positive Dehaze adjustment adds micro-contrast to the individual smoke particles within the plume, making the cloud read as textured and three-dimensional rather than flat and solid.
The correct Dehaze amount for smoke photography is small. Three to eight points of positive Dehaze applied to the smoke mask (not globally) is enough to see the texture enhancement. Beyond ten points you start introducing unwanted artifacts and shadow blocking in the darker edges of the smoke cloud.

Tip 5: Use Tone Curves for the Final Color Grade

For warm, golden-hour smoke images: In the Point Curve, select the Red channel and lift the shadow point slightly (drag the bottom-left anchor point upward by 5 to 8 points). Bonus: Export Settings for Social vs. Print
Smoke bomb images have specific export needs because saturated smoke colors in sRGB JPEG compression can shift slightly from the Lightroom preview. For social media (Instagram, TikTok): export at sRGB, quality 85 to 90, with "Limit File Size" turned off so you are not forcing a lower-quality compression. Instagram re-compresses uploads to its own standards, and starting with a higher quality source file reduces the visible compression artifacts in smoke gradient areas.
For print or for clients who will print: export as sRGB JPEG at quality 95 or higher, or as 16-bit TIFF if the lab accepts it.
